Thanksgiving at the Scotts

If you are an American, chances are that yesterday you gathered with friends and family for a turkey dinner. In between chopping celery and apples for the bread dressing (stuffing) and peeling sweet potatoes I SKYPED our daughter Beka's household. Jason's mom, Nana, was there as well as the Krause family I love so much. I got a kick out of their sons who yelled to my grandson Jakob..."Grammy's on the TV! Come quick, Grammy's on TV." When Elijah figured out I was in California (a long stretch from Minnesota) I had to turn the camera to the front yard so he could see some redwood trees just outside my window. The morning had dawned absolutely beautiful. I had made a Pumpkin Pie Cake the night before (recipe below). I also made some delightful little pumpkin favors a friend had posted the day before on FaceBook. Jellied Orange sliced candies, a little twig, some ribbon and plastic wrap. The turkey went into the oven as we went to the movie theatre, met Liz, Steve & Sydney and watched the new Muppet Movie. Cute and enough to keep adults interested too. Lots of humor that went right over the kids' heads and the adults thought was hilarious. Sydney wanted to sit by me and about halfway through the film she leaned over and said, "Gamma, I want to say Grace tonight." Of course she could! She had told me she wanted to make the rolls. And she did!Our table abounded with good things to eat.I tried out something new I'd heard about this year on the Internet. Take 1 Cup mayonnaise (I used Kraft Olive Oil Mayonnaise) and mix in 1/4 assorted minced herbs. (I used rosemary from the garden, black pepper, tarragon, flat leaf parsley and savory). Loosen the skin from the breast of the turkey and slather 2/3 cup of the mixture under the skin. Then slather the rest all over the outside of the turkey. I used a cooking bag to cook the turkey. The bird was beautiful and I've never, ever, gotten so many compliments on a turkey before. How moist it was, how wonderful the meat tasted! I guess I'll try it again. Sydney thanked the Lord for her family and all the good things He gives us.Then Mr. Scottie Dog carved the bird. Yum, yum.
One last shot....hasn't every kid done this with olives!!!!!!!

Thanksgiving is a time we set aside to thank our God and Creator for our many blessings. I have so many....my wonderful husband, two beautiful daughters and the amazing son-in-laws they brought me, my adorable grandchildren (all 5 of them!), my brothers and their wives and children...we share so many wonderful memories of phenomenal parents and childhoods, a warm and snugly home in the redwoods (such a beautiful place to live). I'm grateful for good friends, new and old, and for our two kitties. I have a job I love, a passion for creativity, good health and so much more.

I thank the Lord for YOU!

Recipe for Pumpkin Pie Cake

Take 1 Large can of pumpkin and prepare just as you would for 2 pies (recipe is on label). Pour into sprayed 9" X 13" pan.
Sprinkle 1 yellow or white cake mix evenly over the pumpkin mixture.
Drizzle top with 2/3 cup melted butter, making sure to include corners.
Bake at 350 degrees for 1 hour or when knife inserted in center comes clean.
Enjoy hot or cold, with vanilla ice cream or whipped cream

Thanksgiving Blessings

The house this morning smells of pies....pumpkin & dutch apple....cinnamon, nutmeg, ginger & cloves. No turkey roasting at our house as Liz is doing it this year. But aromas I relate to Thanksgivings past. Let's see, this is my 57th Thanksgiving. I remember when the stores would go all out and decorate for Thanksgiving. Pictures of Pilgrims & Indians sharing with each other. Respecting each other. A time for Giving Thanks to God. Decorations of Fall Leaves, pumpkins, Indian Corn, gourds. Now it seems that the end of August the Halloween Decorations go up and then the day after Christmas Decorations go up. It's not the same at all. It was a time to gather together with family and friends. I lived in Southern California then with scads of Aunts & Uncles, tons of cousins, shirttail relatives, friends and Thanksgiving was always celebrated with a groaning table of foods we only had a Thanksgiving. I remember the first year I was allowed to set the table! Did you have a "kids" table? The year I turned 13 I moved up to the "adult" table and found out that the kids table was more fun! By the time I was 14 I was helping cook most of the meal. I enjoyed cooking more than my mom did, I think.
In school we learned all about the Pilgrims and how they came to America at great cost so that they could worship God as they wished. They made great sacrifice to do so and life was not easy. Each year we'd have little skits or plays and we'd all make pilgrim hats. Now in school they talk about being Thankful but not being Thankful TO GOD, the provider of all we have.

Of course I am so very grateful and thankful to God for my wonderful family. I come from a family who dearly loved and appreciated each other...my grandparents had great influence in my life...I miss my Mom but am so very thankful for her love and devotion to me and my brothers. My Dad is the best....still loving me, encouraging me and making me laugh. His wife Willa Mae is a delight and the next best thing to having my Mom.
My loving hubby, Mr. Scottie Dog. He's my partner, the love of my life, a real rock in my life. Thirty seven years of marriage and he still lights up my life!
I am so thankful for my wonderful daughters...Beka, pregnant with her 3rd, she makes me proud as she's grown up to be such a lovely woman, a wonderful, caring mother, a woman of principles. Liz, my right hand woman, partner in business so smart it amazes me. My grandchildren delight me, each one is so uniquely lovable.
I'm thankful for my health (especially after 17 horrible days of illness this month), my home, the fact that I am able to live in such an absolutely beautiful place as the Northern CA Redwood coast.
I'm thankful for friends...this year I was able to connect with a group of gals whom I met in kindergarten. We were Blue Birds together and best buddies until we all moved in 7th grade. Some friends come and go, some stay.....I am grateful for the input of all of them.
I am Thankful for my work which seems more like play sometimes. Scottie Dog Quilts is a little store that has introduced me to hundreds, perhaps a thousand of wonderful, creative & artistic people and I get to be a little bit of their lives.
Thank you, Lord for all my blessings. And thank you that they are too numerous to count!

A blessed Thanksgiving to you all!

Turkey Day

I hope your Thanksgiving Dinner was as nice as ours. We missed those family members who weren't with us but Liz and Steve were great hosts.

Liz cooked a perfect turkey! Sydney decided the table needed place cards (where does a 3 year old learn about place cards?) so when we arrived she and Liz were putting the finishing touches on the leaf cards with our names on it. Sydney knew where she wanted everyone to sit. Our meal was fairly traditional. Turkey & stuffing, rolls, gravy, yams with marshmallow topping, cranberry sauce and cranberry jello salad. All Sydney cared about was olives and rolls....typical 3 year old. We all told what we were thankful for round the table, Mr. Scottie Dog asked the blessing and we ate...and ate and ate. Too much, I'm afraid.
Then Bill & Steve did some diagnostic work on a car problem while Liz helped me quilt 3 doll quilts on the big machine. Then we played cards and ate pumpkin pie & apple crisp. Umm, umm. Then Mr. Scottie Dog and I rolled home. Great day!

Thankfulness

Today I'm thankful. Hopefully I am every day but today I wanted to count some of my many blessings.
  • I'm thankful I live in America and have the freedom to worship God. Many of of my dear friends live overseas in countries where it is punishable by death to be a Christian.
  • I'm thankful for my dear husband, Bill aka, Mr. Scottie Dog. He has loved me and supported me for the 36+ years we have been married. He works tirelessly to make my life wonderful.
  • I'm thankful for the opportunity to be Mom to wonderful daughters, to have been able to stay home and raise them..they taught me so very much over the years. I'm so very blessed that we have good relationships now that they are grown.
  • I'm grateful for my Sons-in-law. I hope they are thankful for their Mother-In-Law too! I try to be good.
  • I'm so very blessed to be a Grandma! Sydney, Jakob & Mercedes light up my heart. They love to sing with me...they are the only ones who don't wince when I sing ("Make a joyful noise unto the Lord!"). I relish being their Grandma.
  • I'm blessed to still have my Dad...so very wise in counsel, such a great sense of humor and so much fun. He's blessed us with Willa Mae too.
  • I'm thankful for my dear friends...many who have moved away but still hold a place in my heart. Thank you friends who listen to me, advise me, laugh when I try to tell a joke and are patient when I screw up.
  • I'm blessed to live in Humboldt County, CA in the midst of the Redwood Forest. This is the most beautiful place on Earth. The beauty feeds my soul.
  • I'm grateful for Scottie Dog Quilts where I have met so very many wonderful people who have a passion for quilting. I'm certainly blessed by them.
  • I'm blessed with good health. It's not perfect, but I'm well enough to do most anything I want to do.

These are but a few of my blessings....it is possibly the small ones that are the most precious. I hope you take time each day to give God the glory and thank HIM for your blessings.

Thanksgiving Blessing to you and yours. I'll be spending the day with family.
